Job Title: Water Treatment Flushing Technician

Location: County Louth

Department: Water Treatment / Facilities Maintenance / Mechanical Engineering

Reports To: Water Treatment Supervisor / Project Manager

Job Purpose:

The Water Treatment Flushing Technician is responsible for conducting water system flushing, disinfection, and chemical cleaning to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including preventing and controlling Legionella and other waterborne pathogens. This role involves technical expertise in water treatment, an understanding of system hydraulics, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and hygienically.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Water System Flushing: Perform routine and scheduled flushing of domestic and commercial water systems (including cold water storage tanks, pipework, and cooling systems) to remove debris, stagnant water, and biofilm.
  • Chemical Cleaning and Disinfection: Conduct chemical cleaning and disinfection of water systems using biocides, acids, and other water treatment chemicals to maintain water hygiene and prevent microbiological contamination, such as Legionella.
  • System Monitoring and Sampling: Perform water sampling and system monitoring to check for chemical and microbiological parameters (e.g., Legionella bacteria). Ensure that water systems meet required safety standards.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of flushing activities, disinfection procedures, and test results. Complete site logbooks and produce detailed reports for clients and regulatory bodies as required.
  • System Assessment: Assess the condition of pipework, tanks, and other components to identify issues such as corrosion, scaling, or fouling that might affect water quality or system efficiency.
  • Troubleshooting and Problem Solving: Identify and resolve issues with water systems, including blockages, leaks, and contamination, working closely with other technicians, engineers, and contractors as needed.
  • Compliance with Standards: Ensure all work complies with local and national water hygiene standards, including ACOP L8 (Legionnaires' Disease: The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems), BSRIA guidelines, and other relevant codes of practice.
  • Client Liaison: Communicate with clients regarding water treatment schedules, results, and any issues found during flushing and disinfection. Provide advice on system maintenance and hygiene best practices.
  • Health and Safety: Follow all health and safety regulations during water treatment activities, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and handling of chemicals. Report any hazards or incidents promptly.

 

Qualifications:

Education and Certifications:

  • High school diploma or GED (required); vocational training or certification in water treatment, plumbing, or mechanical systems (preferred).
  • City & Guilds or similar qualification in Legionella control, water treatment, or plumbing (preferred).
  • Certification in Water Hygiene and Legionella Awareness (required).
  • COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) certification (preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various sites.

Experience:

  • 2-4 years of experience in water treatment, flushing, or system disinfection.
  • Experience with both domestic and commercial water systems, including cooling towers, closed systems, and domestic hot/cold water systems.
  • Familiarity with water treatment equipment such as dosing pumps, water meters, filters, and test kits.
  • Experience working in compliance with Legionella control guidelines (ACOP L8) and other relevant water hygiene standards.

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to interpret and work with water system schematics, hydraulic diagrams, and design drawings.
  • Proficient in using water sampling equipment, temperature probes, chemical dosing systems, and water test kits.
  • Strong understanding of water chemistry, including knowledge of corrosion, scaling, and microbial growth control.
  • Competent in using computer systems for reporting, record keeping, and data analysis.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for client interaction and team collaboration.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve water system issues.
